On Saturday May 13th, Daniel and I checked out the gig by the Perth boys Eskimo Joe at the Annandale Hotel. Having never seen them live or even knowing much of their other songs aside from the ones that have received the most airplay ("From the Sea" and their latest "Black Fingernails, Red Wine") we were hoping for some great tunes and yes they did deliver! :)
I remember the first song I ever heard of Eskimo Joe was when I was back in year 11 (wow that's almost seven years ago!) and I heard "Turn Up Your Stereo". I really took a liking to that song and if I was to hear that song now (instead of back then) and compare it to the songs made recently, I would never have thought it was from the same band. Eskimo Joe have certainly come a long way since then!
Eskimo Joe's support acts were the Offcuts and Red Jezebel(Perth). Their live performance was also quite engaging and I especially liked the unusual but lovely mix of country/alternative/rock and in one part Spanish classical guitar which came from the band Red Jezebel.
But the highlight of the evening was no doubt Eskimo Joe! Since their appearance on stage the atmosphere was incredible and the music even more so. I think the woman in front of Daniel was having the best time of her life, having almost guaged out one of his eyes in all the excitement of throwing up her hands constantly! :) Luckily he was saved by her own decision to move to the front of the stage.
After the show we bought their latest single release, "Black Fingernails, Red Wine" which was on sale and walked out of the Annandale Hotel when I realised maybe we could meet the band and possibly get their autographs too! Unfortunately they wouldn't let us back in so that was a little bit of a let down. But it didn't stop me from singing their songs on the trip back home in the car. It was a great night in a very intimately small setting, just right!
Can't wait to see them again!
